Day 1: ROME TO ASSISI (D)
We are transferred from Rome to the hillside town of Assisi where St Francis tended the poor and sick. Join with fellow pilgrims this evening for a warm Welcome Dinner.
Day 2: ASSISI (BD)
Awake to the sound of chapel bells, cobblestone footsteps and the tangible spirit of St Francis preserved in this holy place. We are guided through the towns highlights culminating at the Hermitage in the Woods, built on the cave where St Francis spent many hours in prayer. Our tour concludes at the Basilica of St Clare with prayer before the Holy Crucifix from which God spoke to Francis.
Day 3: FLORENCE DAY TRIP (BD)
Journey north today to Florence, home to fascinating churches, galleries and museums. Our tour of this enchanting city begins with Mass at the Basilica of Santa Croce and the Academy of Fine Arts, home to Michelangelo’s statue of David. We will visit the Ponte Vecchio, the Duomo and nearby see Ghiberti’s bronze doors to the Baptistery. Enjoy the afternoon wandering through the magical streets of Firenze.
Day 4: ASSISI TO ROME (BD)
On our final day in Assisi, we enjoy a guided exploration of the buzzing Basilica of St Francis as we wander through the marvels of the Upper Basilica before our tour descends to the crypt of the Lower Basilica where Francis was laid in 1230. We visit the Basilica of St Mary of the Angels down on the plains where St Francis spent most of his life, and where he died in 1226. This afternoon we make our way to the Eternal City, Rome!
Day 5: ROME PILGRIMAGE – THE MAJOR BASILICAS (BD)
We begin our day with a spectacular Mass at the great St Peter’s Basilica followed by a guided exploration including the nearby Vatican Museums. We continue our tour of the wondrous holy sites of Rome including the awe-inspiring Sistine Chapel, Michelangelo’s stunning Pieta and the tomb of Pope St John Paul II. Our afternoon takes us to renowned Basilicas as well as the Holy Stairs brought from Jerusalem to Rome in 326AD by St Helena.
Day 6: ROME PILGRIMAGE – SAINTS & MARTYRS (BD)
This morning we enter the Colosseum where many early Christians were martyred and view the Circus Maximus, Roman Forum, ancient Catacombs and the majestic Basilica of St Paul Outside the Walls. We dine tonight at the delightful L’Eau Vive Restaurant – the fabulous French Restaurant run by Carmelite Missionary Nuns who sing the Ave Maria to us between courses!
Day 7: ROME PILGRIMAGE – PAPAL & PEOPLE CELEBRATIONS (BD)
Papal Events: In St Peter’s Square we join a General Audience hosted by the Holy Father (Wednesday) OR pray the Angelus with him (Sunday). After our leisurely afternoon we set out to the lively Trastevere district this evening and visit the lovely Church of Santa Maria. Our senses awaken with traditional food and music at the infamous Da Meo Patacca restaurant as a fitting finale celebration.
